The Seattle episode of my ongoing CD-release party finally happened. And it was worth waiting for. It happened last night at Egan’s Ballard Jam House, an intimate club that often features jazz but turned out to be perfect for my blues and stories. We had a small turnout but huge fun. I played songs by Furry Lewis, Ma Rainey, Tommy Johnson, Charley Patton, Robert Johnson, Charlie Manson (the East Coast bluesman, not the California killer) et al, telling stories about them between the songs. I had some distinguished guests in the audience, including harmonicist-bandleaderJeff Herzog (of Jeff and the Jet City Fliers), whom I called onstage to sit in on “Shake Your Hips” and “Nineteen Women Blues,” which he did a fine job on. Bassist John Lee of the Crossroads Blues Band (winners of the Washington Blues Society’s Band of the Year award — congratulations, guys!) also came to the show but I let him stay in his seat, especially since there wasn’t a bass or amp around. Sure hope to play in that club, and elsewhere in that fine city, soon.
