Drinking Without Driving
Portland beer tours hosted by Steve Cheseborough

“Beervana” is what Portland, Oregon proudly calls itself. It has become the center of the world for beer lovers, with a greater number of breweries and variety and quality of beer choices than anywhere else, eclipsing even the great European beer cities. In Portland, you can drink British-style porters, Belgian-style fruit ales and German-style alts, as well as hoppy West Coast IPAs and many, many others, from traditional to experimental.
In fact, there are so many choices that it can be difficult to know where or what to drink. That’s where Drinking Without Driving tours comes in. Let Portland-based author-musician Steve Cheseborough guide you to the best pubs and breweries. He knows the places that are good in general, the ones that are pouring something special right now, and what to order when you get there.
And you’ll get there the way the Earth-conscious locals do in this greenest of cities: by foot and public transportation. No worries about driving under the influence, or paying a driver to sit and wait. As you walk and/or ride the bus, train or streetcar to the next stop, you’ll see the city and build up a powerful thirst!
Each tour includes visits to at least four pubs over eight hours (those who want to continue drinking after that will receive directions to other nearby pubs or back to where they’re staying). The price includes expert tour planning, guidance and company; all transportation fares; the first round at each stop; and umbrellas in case of rain! (Portland’s weather is generally mild year-round, but rain is always likely except during late summer. That’s why we like to sit at pubs and drink good beer.)
One person: $200
Two people: $250 total
Three people: $300 total
And so on, $50 added per additional person.
You might want to time your tour for just before or after one of Portland’s annual beer festivals – Spring Beer and Wine Fest (March), North American Organic Beer Festival (June), Portland International Beer Festival (early July), Oregon Brewers Festival (late July), Holiday Ale Festival (December).
If you have more than one day to devote to this wonderful pursuit, sign up for two or three in a row! There are more than enough brew hotspots for several days’ sipping and exploring.
